Celebration of Success!

On October 31st, we had a k-6 assembly in the gym.  We came together to celebrate reading and the character trait, RESPECT!

During the assembly the students performed to a song called Gotta Keep Reading, a spin from the song Gotta Keep Believing.  The high school media class recorded our performance and I will be getting a copy of that video to post on my site so you can enjoy seeing the fun the students and teachers had making the video.

The students pictured below are the students that met their accelerated reading goal for the first quarter of school.  We are very proud of these students.  Achieving their reading goals means that they spent extra time at home and school reading and were able to complete comprehension quizzes on their books with a passing grade.  We hope that next quarter we will even have more of our students completing the AR goal.

Pictured below were the students that were recognized for having the character trait of respect!

Veteran's Day Program

We would like to invite everyone to the Cavalier Public School's Veteran's Day program on Thursday, November 10th, at 2PM in the school's gym.  Please plan to attend!

Successful PTO Meeting

Last night we held our first PTO meeting of the school year.  There was a great turnout!  We had over 20 people attend!  We discussed the school's draft for the bullying policy, information was provided about ND state assessments and NWEA testing, and Emily Kemp provided information about the volunteer program for the school.  Other items talked about were activites to be plan for the upcoming months.
The next PTO meeting will be held on Nov. 21st at 6:30pm, during that meeting we will have election of officers.
If you were unable to attend last night's meeting we would love for you to attend our November meeting.
Daycare will be provided during the meeting.

Happy Faces at the Cavalier School

It is always so great seeing all these smiling faces when you walk through the halls at the Cavalier Public School!

Sixth Graders Working on Vocabulary Words

We have a new reading series this year for our students.  A big change with this reading series is that they do have some very challenging vocabulary words for students to work on.  It will take more work on the students' part to spend more time studying these words but it will all be worth it for them because it will help them expand their vocabulary and help them with comprehension of their reading.

Excited About Learning!

We are so glad we were able to provide preschool again this year!  I have had many opportunities to observe what the preschool students are learning.  Today they are working on shapes.  The triangle is a tricky one for the little ones but it sure looks like these students are learning that shape with little problems.  They were practicing drawing triangles on the activboard.  Each student got the opportunity to make the shape!  Great job preschoolers!

Letter to the Editor

I am writing this letter to tell everyone a little bit about what I see at the Cavalier Public School.  I think I am very qualified to be the person that should know what is happening at the school because I am the elementary principal and I am now beginning my 8th year at the Cavalier Public School.  I am also a mother of a child that graduated from the school and two children that are still attending.  I have many years in education and have attained my master’s degree in education and several graduate credits beyond that degree.  My parents were educators as well, so as you can see, I am not just a bystander looking into the education system. I have made the education system my life.
The reason I first decided I should write a letter was to encourage the citizens of Cavalier to vote yes on the school’s upcoming building project.  We have held several facility tours and presentations to share with the public some of the concerns and safety issues we have with the Cavalier Public School building and also provide a time where the public could, in turn, ask questions or voice their concerns.  For or against the building project everyone’s voice would be able to be heard at those meetings.  (A much better way to talk about issues with each other rather than printing one-sided stories in the newspaper.)  Before I could get a letter drafted, several letters were published attacking the education system in Cavalier.
I go to work every day at the Cavalier Public School.  I am around all the students--preschool through 12th grade.  I am able to observe teachers teaching and students learning.  I listen to parents talk about their children.  I sit at the table with a team of teachers and parents developing the best plan for individual students to succeed in their education.  I see the many hours that staff put into their job so that their students can have well-planned lessons.  I see children entering the school with smiles on their faces and eagerness to share and learn with each other.  We teach students beyond the subjects that can be tested, but they can certainly be displayed in our community. Those subjects are as follows:
Don’t put others down, be kind, work well together, encourage one another, don’t be a bully or a bystander, stand up for what is right, and tell the truth.  These items aren’t able to be tested on the state assessment.
The Cavalier School is continuously working to improve the education process because that process is ever changing.  We analyze data and make changes and improve curriculum and teaching strategies.  We provide several professional development days for our staff to continue their learning and apply what they learn to the classroom. As our world changes our classrooms change, it is a constant process.  Our goal is to become the best educational site; a goal no one at the Cavalier School will ever give up on. I really do think that the majority of this community are supportive of our efforts and will cheer us on in our path to get there!
I believe we need to compliment our student body at the Cavalier School.  They are working hard to become well prepared for some jobs that aren’t even on the horizon yet.  They have to be able to compete in a world that is ever changing and facing many of its own challenges.  At least in the small town of Cavalier we should be able to make the extra effort to give our children a safe, up-to-date school building.  We may not have a lot of influence in other things in our world that our children will have to face, but we definitely have control of this building project if we all step up to the plate and vote yes.
Yes, a school is more than a building and we will continue to educate your children the best we can with or without an updated building.  I am proud of our school and all the people that make it great-- students, parents, staff, and community!
Yes! Yes! Yes! If you agree that Cavalier children deserve this! It is not about us, it is about them.

NWEA Testing

This week we will finish with the fall NWEA testing for our elementary students.  This is a computerized test that assesses the individual knowledge of our students in the areas of reading, math, and language usage.  This test is very useful for teachers and students because the results are available immediately.  The questions that the students are given can be at grade level, above or below grade level depending on the accuracy of their answers so we can really get a good picture of where each individual student is at in their grade level abilities.  Teachers can use this data to provide additional help to students that show a weakness in an area and/or provide some more challenging activities for those students that show above grade level performance.

Students in grades 8th and 7th will be taking the NWEA tests on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during their first period class.

Support for the Cavalier Preschool Program

There will be a special school board meeting on Monday, August 8th, at 7PM in the FCS room.  One of the items on the agenda is the funding for a Cavalier Preschool.  Last year we were able to begin a regular education preschool at the Cavalier Public school through funds we received from an AYP grant.  This year we did not receive the grant, so we will need to support this program through general fund dollars.  In order to do this the school board members will need to approve that.  I hope they will do that.  I very much believe in the benefits of a preschool program at the Cavalier School.

We hope to run our special ed. and regular ed. preschool programs together through team teaching with Renae Osowski (sp. ed.) and Ann Bennett (reg. ed.).  This would be one of the only schools that would run their program like this.  We feel it would be a wonderful model for all our students.

There is a great need for the school to offer preschool.  I have had over 30 calls from parents showing interest in having their child attend a preschool program.  It is one of the best ways to prepare your child for kindergarten.  Research shows that a high quality preschool program benefits students going into kindergarten.  Parents of students that attended our preschool last year have many positive things to say about it!

If you would like to show your support for this program to continue, I would like to invite you to attend the school board meeting on Monday.

Thanks!

Save Recess!

Some 2nd grade students in Miss Benoit's class were given a persuasive writing assignment this week.  The assignment was to convince me why I should keep recess for the elementary students.  They were told that we should do away with recess and just put more time into reading and math.  I listened to their speeches today and was very impressed.  They came up with a lot of good reasons for keeping recess.  I guess I will let them keep their recess!  : )

Family Literacy Night

20 people attended Family Literacy Night.  We enjoyed popcorn while we played a variety of board games together.

Taking time to play board games at home with your child helps your child learn a variety of skills.  They learn they must follow directions, take turns, read simple instructions, and have fun still while learning!

Everyone left with a smile on their face and a door prize in their hand!  Thanks to everyone that came and participated!

Ending Reading Month with Face Painting and a Parade!

This morning we utilized Mr. Anderson and his art students to do some face painting of our elementary students.  We will be ending our day at school with a good luck parade.  Thank you to Mr. Anderson and his students!

I even tried out my hand at face painting and painted the afternoon preschool class!  They are pictured below.
